Acids

Acids are sour in taste. You may have tasted curd, lemon juice, orange juice or vinegar, etc.  All of them contain natural acids which make them taste sour.

  • Tamarind - Tartaric acid
  • Lemonade- Citric acid
  • Vinegar- Acetic acid
  • Cold drink - Carbonic acid

Acids are acidic in nature which means they dissociate to give H+ ions when dissolved in water.

Type of acids

1. Organic acids

2. Mineral acids

Organic acids- Such acids contain carbon and are found in organic matter i.e plants and animals. Acetic acids, Citric acids, Tartaric acids, etc. Such acids are weak acids.


Mineral acids- such acids are present in minerals present in the earth's crust. Like Hydrochloric acid, Sulphuric acid, and Nitric acid, etc. Such is also called laboratory acids. 

Uses of acids

1. Sulphuric acid is used in the batteries for inverters, cars, etc.

2. Acetic acid is used in the food preservation process. 

3. Citric acid is used in medicine.

4. Tartaric acid is used to make baking powder using the baking soda.

5. Hydrochloric acid is used for cleaning sinks and sanitary wares and in textile industry as bleaching agent.

6. Citric acid is used in medicine.
