Beaks

Birds have beaks in place of teeth. Shape and size of the beak depend upon the kind of food the bird eats. Woodpecker has a chisel-shaped beak to cut holes in trees or to dig out insects from a tree's bark. Kingfisher has long, pointed beak to catch fishes. Grain eating birds like sparrows and pigeons have a strong cone-shaped beak to grinding and breaking seeds and grains.

Birds of prey like kites, eagles, owls and falcons have strong, sharp hooked beaks. They use beaks to tear the flesh of their prey.

Some birds have probing beaks which they use for probing or finding insects out of mud and soil. Probing beaks are long and slender.

Ducks and swans have flat, broad beaks. It helps birds to catch insects, fishes and plants from the water. At the end of the beaks are 2 holes known as strainers which are used for straining out the water.

Hummingbird has a long tubular straw-like beak to suck the nectar from flowers.
