Friction

Friction is a force that opposes the motion. When force is applied to a body on a rough plane in order to move it. The force of friction acts in the opposite direction to the direction of force applied. It is the most significant phenomena in the universe as whatever action is performed by us, force of friction helps us to complete that. But we do have to face some adversities of this essential force.  Whenever, we use any kind of a machine, its mechanical advantage is obstructed by the force of friction. One-Fourth of the energy of an vehicle is wasted to counterpart frictional force.

We have mentioned a few factors that affects a frictional force below-

  • The type of texture of the surface- rough or smooth.
  • The amount of frictional force depends on the position of the object.
  • In case an object is pushed against the surface, the force of friction becomes greater than the weight of the object.

Basically, there are two types of force of friction- Dry friction and Fluid friction. Dry friction is observed in the solids whereas fluid friction is produced by liquids and gases.

Below, we have mentioned two types of Dry friction.

Static friction

This type of friction is responsible for keeping any object in the state of rest. It is basically a self-regulatory force which means it will be equivalent or opposite to the applied force accordingly, at times. Some examples of static friction are-  A paper weight on the table top, A towel hanging on a hook, A car standing at the parking lot, etc.

Sliding Friction

It is a type of resistance generated between an object and the surface on which it is pushed for movement. In order to keep an object sliding over another surface, this force is a must. Sliding friction is always less than the static friction. Some examples of this type of friction are- A heavy box being pushed on a ground, rubbing of our hands, sliding of drawers in a rack, tossing of cards in a deck, etc.
