Earth
Earth, the third planet from the Sun that is a big planetary body with a blanket of air wrapped around it to allow the life to flourish well. Majority of its surface is covered with oceans and other water bodies that has helped it to be entitled with the tag- Blue planet. When astronauts and space travellers see Earth from above they describe our planet with the blue hue with the tint of green, brown and a little bit black colours. Earth is travelling at the speed of 108,000 kilometres (67,000 miles) an hour in the solar system.
Earth is located at a distance of about 150 million kilometres from the Sun. We have already discussed this in previous section that our planet takes 365.25 days to orbit the Sun and 23.93 hours for the Earth to rotate on its own axis. The planet has a diameter of 12,756 km, which is approximately a few hundred km more than that of Venus that is why Venus is said to be the sister planet of the Earth. The gaseous component of the atmosphere is-
1. 78 per cent nitrogen
2. 21 per cent oxygen
3. 1 per cent other constituents.
Our atmosphere, shields us from about all the harmful UV radiations exuding from the Sun. Earth's atmosphere protects us from meteors as well, as due to the high friction caused by the atmospheric layers, the meteors catches fire that results in its degradation.
