Planets

We have discussed the inner and outer planets in the subtopic solar system already. Now, we will be discussing the planets in a detailed format and the sequence - Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

  • Mercury- It is the closest as well as the smallest planet revolving around the Sun. Comparing to the Earth's Moon, Mercury is a bit larger. Due to its very thin layer of the atmosphere, it experiences dramatic changes in its temperature as during the day temperature becomes immensely high whereas at night the temperature falls in the –°C. Mercury is visible to us through the naked eye. The revolution period of mercury around the sun in 88 days.
  • Venus- It is in the second place starting from mercury while orbiting the Sun. Its dense and toxic atmosphere makes it the hottest planet in the solar system resulting in scorching heat. It rotates from east to west direction that is contradictory to other planets and spins very slowly around the sun. It revolves with a slow pace around the sun that one revolution is equal to 225 earth days. It is commonly known as the morning and evening star as it is visible to us with naked eyes.
  • Earth- The only planet by far that can sustain the living beings on it is the blue planet- Earth. 2/3rd of the Earth's surface is covered with water only. It has only one natural satellite i.e the Moon. Its atmosphere is rich in nitrogen and oxygen that helps harbour life efficiently. Earth takes 365.25 days to revolve around the sun. The rotating period of the planet is 23 hours 6 hours.
  • Mars- It is commonly known as the red planet and is the fourth planet from the sun. It is a cold desert-like place covered in dust which is formed up of iron oxide providing the planet with its unique red colour. As per the latest scientific research, the planet resembles the Earth as it is rocky, possessing mountains, valleys, etc. The water is hard to be possessed by the planet- Mars, cause the atmosphere is very thin to enclose the water droplets within its range. It is named after the Roman god of war. The rotation period of the planet is 24 hours and 37 minutes- approximately one hour more than Earth day.
  • Jupiter- It is the fifth planet from the Sun, and is the largest planet that is also known as the gaseous giant. It has an exclusive feature that is -the Giant red spot which is a massive dust storm, in reality, giving it a unique identity. It has 75 moons of its own that are abiding by it through its strong magnetic field. Jupiter revolves as well as rotates at a very fast pace.
  • Saturn- The unique planet Saturn, is sixth from the Sun and is well-known for its beautiful icy and rocky ring around it. It is majorly formed from hydrogen and helium, with numerous moons. This planet is named after the Roman god of agriculture.

  • Uranus- It is the seventh planet from the Sun. You must have smelt the foul odour of rotten eggs, it is the smell hydrogen sulfide. The planet is made up of hydrogen sulfide only. It also rotates from east to west just like Venus. Uranus possesses 27 moons of its own.
  • Neptune- Equal to the size of Uranus, it is the eighth planet from the Sun. It is well known for it supersonic winds. It has a rocky core and 17 time bigger than the planet Earth.

Once, Pluto was also considered one among the planets in our solar system, but not anymore.
