Chipko Andolan (Hug the Trees Movement)

The Chipko Andolan began in the 1970s in the Himalayas (present-day Uttarakhand). Villagers-especially women-hugged trees to stop them from being cut, protecting forests, soil, and water.

Remember: Chipko means "to stick" or "to hug." Saving trees helps animals, rainfall, and clean air.
