Direction Sense - Grade 4 (Brief Guide)

Master how to read a map with a North arrow, talk about positions like North-East, and give route instructions using turns. Visuals below are drawn with HTML and CSS only.

1. Compass basics

  • Main directions: North, East, South, West. Clockwise order is N, E, S, W.
  • Between them are NE, SE, SW, NW. These are diagonal directions.
  • On most maps, North is up. Always locate the North marker first.
  • If A is east of B, then B is west of A. All such pairs are opposites.
Fast check: move on a grid. One step up is North, one step right is East. NE is up plus right together.
NS EW NESE SWNW

Red tip points North; blue points South.

2. Mini town map (positions from the house)

North is up, East is right. The house is the reference point.

House
Library
Shop
Restaurant
  • Park is East of the house. School is North-East of the house.
  • Restaurant is South-East. Library is South-West. Hospital is North-West.
  • Shop is directly South of the house.

3. Turns and facing

  • Right turn is 90 degrees clockwise. Left turn is 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
  • Half turn is 180 degrees. Three-quarter turn is 270 degrees.

Route idea: From the restaurant to the house, go North one block, then West one block.

4. Quick method to solve map questions

  1. Find the North marker on the picture or map.
  2. Mark the reference place as the origin (for example, the house).
  3. Translate words into moves: North is up, South is down, East is right, West is left. NE is up plus right, etc.
  4. For routes, update your facing after every turn before taking the next move.
  5. If the question changes the origin (for example, now from restaurant), reset the origin and repeat.

5. Common mistakes and fixes

  • Skipping the North arrow. Fix: find North first every time.
  • Mixing facing with location. Facing East is direction you look; East of the house is a position on the map.
  • Forgetting to reset the origin. When the phrase changes to “from the restaurant”, start from there.
  • Reading diagonals as only up or only right. NE is both up and right together.

Practice that feels like the real Olympiad.

Achievers’ question banks that mirror the exam. Less theory. More score.
