English - Conjunctions (Grade 1)

Conjunctions are joining words. They connect words or short sentences to make meaning clear and smooth.

What are Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that joins two things: words or small sentences.

Common Conjunctions

Shows a choice.

Do you want tea or juice
Wear a cap or a hood.

Shows contrast or difference.

How to Use Them

Reason and Result

It was cold, so we wore coats. We wore coats because it was cold.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not use and when you must choose. Use or.
  • Use but only when the ideas are different in meaning.
  • Use because to give a reason. Do not use so there.
  • In Grade 1, keep sentences short. One conjunction per sentence is enough.
