English - Conjunctions (Grade 1)

Conjunctions are joining words. They connect words or short sentences to make meaning clear and smooth.

What are Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that joins two things: words or small sentences.

Common Conjunctions

and

Joins similar things.

Mira and Kabir sing.

We have bread and milk.

or

Shows a choice.

Do you want tea or juice

Wear a cap or a hood.

but

Shows contrast or difference.

It is sunny but windy.

He is small but strong.

because

Gives a reason.

We stayed inside because it rained.

so

Gives a result.

It rained, so we used umbrellas.

How to Use Them

Situation	Use	Example
Two similar things	and	Ravi draws and paints.
Asking or choosing	or	Shall we walk or ride
Opposite ideas	but	Neel is tired but happy.
Give reason	because	I wore boots because it was wet.
Tell result	so	It was late, so we slept.

Tip: Use because to tell why something happened. Use so to tell what happened after that.

Join the Sentences

Same kind

Ana reads. Ana writes. -> Ana reads and writes.

Choice

We can take the bus. We can take the taxi. -> We can take the bus or the taxi.

Contrast

It looks easy. It is tricky. -> It looks easy, but it is tricky.

Reason and Result

It was cold, so we wore coats. We wore coats because it was cold.

Common Mistakes

Do not use and when you must choose. Use or.
Use but only when the ideas are different in meaning.
Use because to give a reason. Do not use so there.
In Grade 1, keep sentences short. One conjunction per sentence is enough.
