Adjectives — Grade 1 (Describing Words)

Adjectives are words that describe nouns. They tell what kind, which one, how many, or how something looks, tastes, feels, or sounds. Examples: a sunny day • a round mat • six dogs • a delicious cake

What is an adjective?

Spot the adjective

In “She drank hot milk,” hot tells us about the milk — it’s an adjective.

Where do adjectives sit?

Before a noun

We sat on a round mat.

After am/is/are

The grass is green. • The tea is hot.

Teacher tip

For Grade-1, keep to one or two adjectives before a noun: a big red ball is fine; avoid long strings.

Common mistakes (quick fixes)

“quite” vs “quiet”

quiet = not noisy; quite = very. a quiet sea

Numbers need plurals

Write: two cats (not “two cat”).

Keep it simple

Use 1–2 adjectives: a big red ball (not too many words).

Adjective vs. adverb

happy child (adjective) but happily sings (adverb). For Grade-1, focus on adjective forms.
