Perimeter: Sum of the length of the boundary of any closed figure is called its Perimeter.
OR
the sum of all sides of any closed figure is called Perimeter.
The perimeter of the Rectangle: Rectangle is a four-sided figure in which opposite sides are equal and parallel.
Perimeter of Rectangle=length+length+breadth+breadth
=2length+2breadth
=2(length+breadth)
Example: Find the perimeter of rectangle whose length is 5cm, and breadth is 8cm?
Solution: Perimeter of Rectangle=2(length+breadth)
=2(5+8)
=2(13)
=26cm
The perimeter of Square: Square is a four-sided closed figure in which all sides are equal and pairs of opposite sides are parallel.
Perimeter of Square=side+side+side+side
=4Xside
Example: Find the perimeter of a square whose side is 9cm?
Solution: Perimeter of square=4Xside
=4X9
=36cm
Area: The surface enclosed in a closed figure is called area.
Area of Rectangle: length X breadth
Example: Find the area of the rectangle whose length is 8cm and breadth=14cm?
Solution: Area of Rectangle=LengthXbreadth
=8X14
= 112cm2?
Area of Square= side X side
Example: Find the area of the square whose side is 15cm?
Solution: Area of square=sideXside
=15X15
=225cm2?
Points to remember
a) The perimeter of equilateral triangle=3Xlength of side
b) Perimeter of regular polygon=number of sides in the polygon X length of the side.
c) Unit of area is unit square
d) Figures with the same perimeter can have different areas.
e)Figures with the same areas can have different perimeters.
