Work and Energy

Work

How is it that we push something and it moves. It is because we applied force to an object and the result was the movement in it. This activity performed by us is considered work done. No matter how much amount of force is being applied on an object, if it doesn't move even a little bit, no work is said to be done as per the definition of work in Science language. We can conclude that work will said to be done only if displacement of an object is witnessed otherwise not.

Energy

We are familiar with the concept of Force as we already discussed it in previous subtopic. Now, let us discuss the Energy, that is a must to apply significant force to an object to perform work. The easy definition that you must learn is- The ability to do the work is called Energy. Everyday, we perform number of works and for that we require immense energy. We obtain this energy from the food we eat. Basically, there are two types of energy- Potential energy and Kinetic energy.

Potential energy is the one that is acquired by any object due to its position/resting position whereas Kinetic energy is a form of energy that is acquired by the movement in any object.

There are numerous other forms energy as well which has been listed below, let's discuss these.

  • Light energy- The Sun is the chief source of light energy. Light is a form of energy and there are many artificial sources as well from where we obtain the light energy. Burning of candle/wood, Bulbs, lamps, etc also provides us with the light energy.
  • Heat energy-  Heat energy is a must for our survival.  We need heat to maintain constant body temperature, cook food, boil water, etc. We also obtain heat energy from the Sun. By burning  wood, oil, LPG, etc, we can fulfill the need of heat energy efficiently.
  • Electrical energy- The electrical energy Is essential for today's generation of highly advanced energy as all the essential appliances run on this type of energy only. Fans, Coolers, lights, computers, etc all drive with the help of electricity.
  • Wind Energy- As we aware that the moving air is only known as wind which is also a source of energy. We obtain wind energy from wind mills. The sailors seek help of wind energy to sail their boats.
