Phases of the Moon

As we know that the Moon is the only satellite that the Earth has and it orbits around our planet. This movement of the moon through space causes the formation of various phases of it. Being on Earth we can easily witness this change in the shape of this heavenly body it possesses no light of its own, instead reflects the light of the Sun only.

The phases of the Moon depend on the position of it with respect to the sun in the solar system. When the light being radiated by the Sun is obstructed by the Earth's and it causes the formation of shadow on the surface of Moon then we see the change in its shape. The picture below represents different shapes of the Moon according to its position while rotating around the Earth.
