Neutralization

The reaction between an acid and a base is called a neutralization reaction. As the product of the reaction salt, water and heat are produced.

Acid + Base —> Salt + Water + Heat

Eg.

HCL + NaOH—› NaCL + H2O

It is an exothermic reaction as heat is evolved as a by-product.

Neutralization in everyday life

  • Indigestion

As we know our stomach releases hydrochloric acid which helps in digestion of food. If his acid is produced in excess quantity in the stomach it causes indigestion which js very painful. To relieve it we take antacids which are bases to neutralize the effect of excess acid like milk of magnesia which contains magnesium hydroxide.

  • A bee sting or ant bite

When an ant bites or bee stings, it injects an acidic fluid which is formic acid inside the skin. In order to neutralize the acidic effect of the sting, we rub moist baking soda which is basic in nature or calamine solution on the affected area. Baking soda contains sodium hydrogen carbonate and calamine solution contains zinc carbonate.

  • Toothpaste

It is alkaline in nature and can neutralize the acid produced by the fermentation of food particles in our mouth.

  • Acid burns

If an acid burn occurs then we must sprinkle a dilute solution of baking soda on the affected area.
